Belarusian Popular Front to take part in parliamentary race

The Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) will take part in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, BPF Chairman Alyaksey Yanukevich told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on Monday.

“We`ll use the elections to rally support from as many people as possible,” said Mr. Yanukevich. “We have already discussed the matter within our party and decided that we will put forward parliamentary contenders, but on certain conditions. We don`t see any point in boycotting the elections. And our preparations are in full swing to draw up lists of parliamentary nominees.”

Mr. Yanukevich said that the party would withdraw its candidates from the race if political prisoners continued to be imprisoned in the country and its representatives were denied seats on local election commissions.

“We will make a decision about their possible withdrawal a week ahead of the voting,” he said. “It is obvious already today that the elections will be held in accordance with the authorities’ instructions, which means that there is a very high probability that our candidates will withdraw. //BelaPAN
