Sergei Lebedev stated that Belarus might be offered to take up chairmanship in the Commonwealth of Independent States next year.
“As far as I know the Belarusian authorities are not against it. We are coordinating this issue now,” Sergei Lebedev said. He stressed that Belarus is an active participant of the integration. “If the country assumes the presidency it will successfully cope with the task thanks to the wealth of experience.” Sergei Lebedev noted that Belarus maintains close cooperation in the CIS, with the CIS Executive Committee, other sectoral councils.
Documents for Belarus’ CIS presidency have not yet been signed. The decision will be taken at a meeting of the CIS Council of the Heads of State on 2 November, said Sergei Lebedev.
