Political parties dominant among potential Belarusian MPs

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – The majority of the people, who have submitted applications to get registered as candidates for the fifth convocation House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, are representatives of political parties, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina told media on 17 August.

As many as 252 people represent political parties. They constitute over 50% of those, who have submitted candidate registration applications (494 people). The official said: “For the country where political parties are after all exotic, we have few party members, it is a large representation. It is obviously an inflated number considering the share of political parties in the social structure of the society”.

She added that there are many unemployed persons, self-employed businessmen, medics, and civil servants among those nominated. There are also media persons, well-known artists among the potential members of the parliament. As many as 22 existing parliamentarians and members of previous convocation parliaments are eager to fight for a parliament seat.
