Victoria Azarenka
MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) – Belarus' number one Victoria Azarenka, ranked 15th in the world, has made a good start at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian opened the tournament against Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas (World No.87) in the second round and needed 88 minutes to beat her opponent 6-3, 6-2. Victoria Azarenka will next play China Zheng Saisai (World No. 69) who beat former world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark (currently World No. 25). The Belarusian won seven of 11 on-court meetings with the Dutch player. The Belarusian leading tennis player is making her 10th appearance in Indian Wells. In 2012 she claimed the title defeating Russia's Maria Sharapova in the final.
Olga Govortsova of Belarus (World No.84) lost to Russia's Margarita Gasparyan (44) 1-6, 3-6 in the first round. Alexandra Sasnovich of Belarus (102) lost to Czech Barbora Strycova (37) 1-6, 3-6 in the opener as well. Alexandra Sasnovich reached the Indian Wells main draw after beating Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva (World No.128) 7-5, 6-4 and seeing off World No.59 Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-1, 6-2.
In the men's doubles event Max Mirnyi of Belarus and his new partner, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria lost to the French duo of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-7, 2-6.
The tournament in Indian Wells will complete on 20 March.
