Belarus, Poland drafting agreement on cooperation in water management

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) – Belarus and Poland are drafting an agreement on cooperation in water resources management, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Igor Kachanovsky told BelTA.

“We have great cooperation plans. At present, we are putting the finishing touches to the Belarusian-Polish agreement on cooperation in water resources management,” Igor Kachanovsky said.

He noted that the document will contain proposals regarding the establishment of a system for monitoring and clean-up of the Bug River. “The Polish side already takes part in some events. There are some issues with water treatment facilities in Kobrin, Brest, and Zhabinka. The cooperation program will regulate this matter,” Igor Kachanovsky explained.

As for the financing of the project, the official said that some funding may be obtained through EU technical assistance programs. “Besides, Poland has a fund for environmental protection, and we hope it will take part in our projects. Besides, we will definitely invest our own funds,” Igor Kachanovsky emphasized.

The International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated on 14 March. It used to be called the International Day of Action Against Dams: For Rivers, Water, and Life. Today it is also known as the International Day of Action Against Dams. The day was first marked in 1998.
