MINSK, February (BelTA) – Belarus and Poland are working on a joint rabies prevention program, Polish Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ewa Lech told journalists before a meeting of the Belarusian-Polish working group on agricultural cooperation on 29 February, BelTA has learned.
“We are eager to cooperate with Belarus in this field. A program for cooperation has already been drawn up. There are some unsettled issues of a legal nature related to compliance with international law. We hope that the agreement will be signed,” Ewa Lech said. The European Union is expected to provide some funding for the joint Belarusian-Polish rabies prevention activities.
Alexander Subbotin, Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister, Director of the Veterinary and Food Surveillance Department, noted that Belarus already has rabies prevention agreements with Lithuania and Latvia. “We closely cooperate with these countries. To create an anti-rabies buffer zone promoted by the European Union, we need Poland to be involved in this process,” Alexander Subbotin added. Besides, there are some legislative regulations and veterinary certification rules that need to be clarified.
Other matters on the agenda of the meeting include prospects of the Belarusian-Polish trade in agricultural products in the context of Belarus' membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and Poland's status of a EU member state, phytosanitary cooperation, participation in agricultural expos and business forums, and exchange of experts and best farming practices.
