MINSK, 9 March (BelTA) – Belarus does not criticize Europe for its understanding of human rights, but maintains its own position on this issue, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with European Union Special Representative for Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis on 9 March, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian President noted that he does not criticize Europe for its understanding of human rights. “The European Union is a mature organization with smart people who can formulate what they want,” said Alexander Lukashenko. “But we have our own understanding of humanitarian issues, including human rights issues,” the President remarked and stressed that the position of Belarus depends not only on his personal understanding or the understanding of the Belarusian government. If this had been like that, all these issues would have been quickly solved in Belarus, added the President.
“The resolution of these issues touches upon the lives of people, first of all, its material dimension. This is how we see it,” said Alexander Lukashenko. He also stressed that Belarus is developing this field, sees what is going on in the world and how similar issues are solved in the European Union, the USA, Russia, China, and other states. “We are flexible, we are learning. We have adopted many practices of yours and adjusted them to our life. I think we will continue doing it in the future,” Alexander Lukashenko said. At the same time, the European Union now understands Belarus better, the President noted. He also expressed confidence that the process will continue developing in the same vein.
