MINSK, 4 March (BelTA) – Press Secretary of the State Border Committee of Belarus Alexander Tishchenko talked to BelTA about the latest news on the Internet concerning the possible closure of the Belarusian-Lithuanian border by Lithuania.
On 4 March mass media quoted Lithuanian Vice Minister of the Interior Elvinas Jankevicius as saying that if necessary, Lithuania is ready to shut down the Belarusian-Lithuanian border if uncontrolled flows of refugees approach the border.
“The phrase may have been taken out of context. There can be no flows of refugees at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. We could expect such things if we had access to the Aegean Sea. We are not Greece after all,” said the Press Secretary of the State Border Committee of Belarus.
He remarked that Belarus and Lithuania have no problems along the border. “The high level of cooperation and problem-solving with Lithuania allows controlling the situation. We detect possible flows and trends at an early stage. We suppress not only migration channels but even attempts to organize them,” noted the official.
