Belarusian enterprises urged to develop export diversification strategies

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) - Processing enterprises must develop export diversification strategies until 2020, Alexei Bogdanov, the head of the main division for foreign economic activity at the Food and Agriculture Minsitry, said during a seminar on export promotion on 3 March, BelTA has learned.

“We want every enterprise to develop a strategy for the diversification of exports until 2020. Brand promotion is also very important. Increasing the visibility of the brand and promoting it require a lot of effort,” Alexei Bogdanov stressed.

Export diversification is one of the priorities of the Food and Agriculture Ministry. “We need to stop targeting the Russian market only. We need to look for new markets. I think that the year 2015 opened the eyes of many managers. Although our export grew in physical terms, it shrank badly in monetary terms. We missed on about $1 billion,” he said. In 2015 the export of processing enterprises totaled $4.4 billion ($5.6 billion in 2014).

Alexei Bogdanov noted that in 2016 the ministry is expected to export $3.2 million worth of goods to new markets. The Ministry already identified a list of priority countries. It includes 24 states in Southeast and Central Asia, North and Central America, Africa and Australia. Among them are Singapore, the Philippines, Canada, and Australia.

“Belarusian enterprises should trade in goods with maximum added value. Many companies can deliver raw commodities, for example, dry milk, more so that the quality of our products is very high. But to enter the markets of third countries with finished goods, win a place on the store shelves is not an easy job to do,” said Alexei Bogdanov.
