GRODNO, 11 March (BelTA) – School students in Belarus' Grodno Oblast will join the global campaign to plant 100 million trees initiated by the virtual school and network for sustainable development Environment Online (ENO), BelTA learned from the Grodno Region Forestry Board (GRFB).
“The Belarusian Forestry Ministry has received a letter from the Embassy of Finland inviting Belarusian schools and forestry agencies to join the international ENO campaign to plant 100 million trees. We regularly hold projects to improve environmental awareness in children, and have decided to support the initiative,” the GRFB said.
The global virtual school Environment Online was created by school teacher Mika Vanhanen from Finland in 2000. Today the network involves more than 10,000 schools from 150 countries. The Belarusian children will plant trees as part of the nationwide project Forest Week and other events.
“We have plans to plant more than 10 million tree seedlings on the area of 2,300 hectares,” the GRFB noted. The total territory covered in forests in Grodno Oblast will exceed 910,000 hectares.
