CIS states to recover from economic crisis together

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – Member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization will work together to find ways out of the difficult economic situation in the region, BelTA learned from Sergei Lebedev, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary, on 16 December.

According to Sergei Lebedev, in 2008 a permanent conference of finance ministers was created by the relevant decision of the CIS Heads of State Council and the CIS Heads of Government Council, with heads of the central banks of the CIS member states invited to participate. Such conferences were held regularly except for 2014. “But a proposal in favor of arranging urgent consultations of the heads of the government agencies in charge of economy and finance in the CIS states was voiced at the session of the Heads of Government Council in Ashgabat a short while ago. It was suggested that the conference should be held as soon as possible,” said Sergei Lebedev. The meeting of the economy ministers and other officials in charge of financial matters took place as part of the session of the CIS Economic Council in Moscow on 12 December. “Quite a dedicated exchange of opinions took place. It was decided to create a working group involving representatives of the CIS states. The CIS Executive Committee was instructed to organize a session of the group and prepare the joint action plan that the CIS member states will carry out to minimize negative consequences for economy,” he explained.

Speaking about the complicated situation regarding supplies of Belarusian products to the Russian market, Sergei Lebedev remarked: “During the consultations between the economy ministers of the CIS states in Moscow this topic was discussed rather lively and certainly conclusions will be made. Moreover, representatives of other CIS states except for Russia and Belarus backed the intensive dialogue that is proceeding at different levels between representatives of the economic agencies of Russia and Belarus for the sake of finding a way out of the current situation as soon as possible,” he said.

The Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary said that the differences of opinion between Russia and Belarus were a routine matter that can also be seen in other economic associations such as the European Union.
