MOSCOW, 23 September (BelTA) – Belarusian law enforcement agencies are investigating signs of corruption in over 20 cases in the course of the export of Belarusian products to Russia. The information was released by Igor Greibo, Chief of the Corruption and Organized Crime Office of the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus, on 23 September, BelTA has learned.
Igor Greibo noted that these cases involve unscrupulous practices on the part of both buyers and executives of Belarusian enterprises and organizations that supplied the merchandise to Russia. According to the source, these parties have committed fraud and deliberate bankruptcy and have failed to execute court rulings. “The Belarusian prosecution service and other law enforcement agencies are taking measures to prevent corruption and criminal schemes that inhibit the collection of payments for supplied products or somehow cause harm to our enterprises,” said the official.
The representative of the prosecution service noted that while analyzing foreign trade contracts of Belarusian enterprises they primarily focus on the solvency of the buyer. “We analyze how the contract work is done. If the buyer can indeed buy the merchandise and pay the money, then naturally we have nothing to complain about. If a payment is delayed, if the buyer owes money but still continues getting the merchandise, corruption risks emerge. We look into the case then and use prosecution response measures, including criminal investigations,” said Igor Greibo.
A conference involving representatives of the distribution network of Belarusian enterprises is scheduled to take place in Moscow on 23-24 September upon the initiative of the Embassy of Belarus in Russia. Participants of the conference are supposed to discuss prospects of increasing Belarus' export to Russia taking into account the current economic situation, ways to reduce accounts receivable of Belarusian enterprises and opportunities to collect problem debts. Representatives of the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus also took part in the conference.
