MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko hopes that Belarusian-German relations will rise. The MP made the relevant statement as he met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Peter Dettmar on 2 March, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Andreichenko stated with regret that Belarus-Germany bilateral relations have been declining for some time, however, now “the period of mistrust and certain mutual lack of understanding is becoming a thing of the past”. “As far as the European region is concerned, Belarus has always highly prioritized cooperation with Germany,” stated Vladimir Andreichenko. “New opportunities for stepping up this cooperation in many areas are opening up.”

The head of the lower chamber of the Belarus parliament drew attention to trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. Vladimir Andreichenko noted that in 2015 Belarus-Germany trade was close to $2.5 billion. “But in 2013 the figure was as high as $4.8 billion. In other words, we have to improve the current figure,” the MP was convinced.

In his words, at present there are 361 companies with a share of German investments in Belarus. “We are interested in the arrival of German investors in the industries where they are recognized as leaders by the entire world,” noted Vladimir Andreichenko. As an example he mentioned mechanical engineering industry.

Apart from that, Vladimir Andreichenko said it is necessary to step up cooperation in the sphere of high technologies, power engineering. It is necessary to establish humanitarian cooperation and advance relations between twinned cities of Belarus and Germany. “At present we have 20 pairs of twinned cities and towns. A meeting of their representatives will take place in Nesvizh this year,” he said.

Vladimir Andreichenko also added that the parliament plays an important role in advancing the bilateral relations. He said he believes it is necessary to further establish direct contacts between members of the parliaments of Belarus and Germany.
