Italy's former prime minister backs integration of integrations

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – President of the Foundation for Worldwide Cooperation, former prime minister of Italy Romano Prodi approves of the idea of integration of integrations from Lisbon to Vladivostok. Romano Prodi made the relevant statement at the meeting with students of the Belarusian State University in Minsk on 16 December, BelTA has learned.

When asked whether the integration of the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union was possible in the future since the initiative was initially put forward by Belarus, Romano Prodi said that the work on the idea should continue. “There is one thing though. Tensions in the political scene make such a project impossible at present,” he said.

According to the former prime minister of Italy, this project would require many years because the economic situation in the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union differs a lot. “Excessively fast integration would damage the agriculture and the industry of these countries. It is necessary to work out a project for step-by-step integration over the course of at least 20 years. I suggested creating a ring of friends as the president of the European Commission after the European Union's expansion. It means that all the countries that cooperate with the European Union starting with Belarus and Ukraine and ending with African countries like Egypt and Morocco would be able to interact with the European Union on all matters of international politics,” he said. While these countries would be unable to participate in the European Parliament and in making decisions, they would be able to have a dialogue, added Romano Prodi.
