Lukashenko suggests using all Union State tools for advancing cooperation

MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) – It is essential to use all platforms and formats of the Union State for advancing cooperation and effective decision-making, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the session of the Union State Supreme State Council in Minsk on 25 February, BelTA has learned.

“I think you will agree that there are all conditions for the harmonized and smooth work within the framework of our integration. This mechanism runs like clockwork,” the Belarusian President said addressing the participants of the session.

He noted that it was planned to discuss the progress in the implementation of mid-term priorities in the Union State development at the Supreme State Council session. These priorities were determined a year ago, and the sides should clearly understand where they have made progress and where they need to step up efforts, the Belarusian leader believes.

“Global superpowers and neighboring countries draw much attention to the foreign policy of Belarus and Russia, the military aspects of our cooperation,” the Belarusian head of state said. The participants of the session will consider and approve the program of concerted efforts in the foreign policy of the Union State member states in 2016-2017. According to the Belarusian leader, the sides need to take into account the experience of efficient work within the framework of the previous document.

“Persistent military and political crises, resuming bloc thinking in a number of countries, overall use of sanctions as an instrument of political pressure make us keep our powder dry. Therefore, today we will pay special attention to the defense sector,” the Belarusian President remarked. In particular, the heads of state are expected to discuss the planning of deployment of regional forces of Belarus and Russia.
