MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – Poland is an important country for Belarus, so we would like it to be our friend and partner rather than an opponent, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told journalists after the meeting with his Polish counterpart on 22 March, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei emphasized that Belarus is interested in maintaining normal relations with Poland in all fields, including politics, trade, economy, culture, and humanitarian affairs. “We would like our common border to be a border of friendship, not a dividing line,” the Belarusian diplomat said. In this context, the ministers paid special attention to the current issues of bilateral relations.

Vladimir Makei expressed hope for normalization and development of relations between Belarus and the European Union. “This does not mean that we will break our ties, or build friendship with somebody at the expense of someone else. This actually means that we are determined to diversify our foreign economic and political relations maintaining ties with our key partner, Russia, the EU, and other countries,” the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed. He added that Poland, as an EU country and a neighboring state, is of great importance for Belarus.
