Moldova seeks to maintain good relations with CU despite association with EU

CHISINAU, 27 June (BelTA) – Moldova's association agreement and free trade agreement with the European Union do not run contrary to good political and economic relations with the Customs Union member states of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan and the joint free trade agreement with the CIS, Prime Minister of Moldova Iurie Leanca told reporters in Brussels on 27 June after signing the association agreement with the EU, BelTA has learnt.

Iurie Leanca underlined that Moldova will keep expanding constructive and mutually beneficial relations with the Customs Union. The Moldovan Premier expressed hope that Moldova's relations with the eastern partners will improve in the future, because the euro-integration will make it a more predictable and stabile partner. Iurie Leanca reminded that Moldova held several rounds of consultations with Russia to discuss the FTA with the European Union. Similar consultations will soon be held with Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti stated that the country's decision in favor of the European Union does not imply any antagonism towards its CIS partners. He believes that the CIS member states will only benefit from cooperation with Moldova.
