VITEBSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Memory about our roots and respect for culture make a group of people a nation, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with the staff of the Vitebsk State Medical University on 2 March, BelTA has learned.
The Year of Culture in Belarus was the focus of the meeting. “I am not an advocate of cosmopolitanism. A person should have his own roots, culture, and language and respect them. This is what makes us a nation, not just a group of people. Thanks to the support from the head of state, we have managed to preserve and multiply our major cultural achievements,” Mikhail Myasnikovich noted.
As for the anniversaries to be celebrated during the Year of Culture, the official paid special attention to the 25th birthday of the festival Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk. “We have grown used to having the festival every year. However, it is not some local event. It has an international status,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said. He pointed out that the president of Turkmenistan has recently expressed a strong desire to come to Vitebsk for the festival. The Chairman of the Council of the Republic added that Belarusian culture should be promoted not only with the help of international festivals, but also using the names of renowned Belarusians.
Mikhail Myasnikovich said some words about the Code on Culture to be adopted in Belarus in 2016. He invited the university staff to come up with suggestions regarding the document.
Mikhail Myasnikovich visited Vitebsk Oblast on 2 March. He paid a visit to the Vitebsk State Medical University to learn about the academic activities, scientific achievements, talk to professors and students, and find out about the first results of work of the recently set up pharmaceutical cluster. The official will also visit the enterprises Polymerconstruction and Vitebsk Fur Factory. Finally, Mikhail Myasnikovich will pay a visit to Beshenkovichi District and the pharmaceutical company Nativita that will be put into operation this year.
