GRODNO, 10 March (BelTA) – The reconstruction of the Polish part of the Belarusian-Polish border checkpoint Berestovitsa-Bobrovniki will begin in 2016. The relevant statement was made during the meeting of Chairman of the State Customs Committee of Belarus Yuri Senko and Chief of the Customs Service of Poland Marian Banas at the border checkpoint Bruzgi, BelTA has learned.

According to Yuri Senko, during the meeting the sides discussed matters concerning smooth border crossing, the larger vehicle traffic that is expected to cross the Belarusian-Polish border, and the development of the necessary infrastructure.

The Polish customs service intends to start reconstructing its part of the border checkpoint Berestovitsa-Bobrovniki in 2016. The Belarusian side is about to finish reconstruction. Apart from that, plans have been made to build a new automobile bridge on approach to the Belarusian part of the border checkpoint in 2017.

The Belarusian and Polish customs services are busy developing the relevant high technologies. At present the two customs services are ready to share as much accumulated experience as possible. “We are ready to connect our technologies in order to keep traffic flowing smoothly across the border. I would like to note that the throughput capacity of border checkpoints grows all the time. We notify the interested parties about capacities of this or that direction in a timely manner,” explained the chief of Belarus' Customs.

During the meeting the sides also mentioned better information cooperation in law enforcement affairs such as the suppression of drugs trafficking and weapons trade.

The so-called Silk Road was also discussed. Two out of four transit corridors cross Belarus and can be used to transport commodities as part of the Silk Road project. The sides are now working together to minimize the time spent clearing transit cargoes. Not only the customs services but other agencies concerned are interested in this cooperation.

Marian Banas concluded that cooperation with the Belarusian customs service was generally positive. “Such meetings allow us to better coordinate this work, make border-crossing procedures faster and more convenient. The coordinated development of infrastructure at border checkpoints also contributes to it”.
