Probe into counterfeited Belarusian foods in Russia

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Plans have been made to set up a lab to detect foods, which are sold in Russia under the guise of Belarusian products, BelTA learned from Belarusian First Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Marinich on 6 October. The information was released during the roundtable session held as part of Saint Petersburg Days in Minsk to discuss cooperation in food trade.

“We see that falsified Belarusian products are sold in Russia. We have contacted the food studies center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus with a view to setting up a lab to detect falsified products. The relevant equipment is available. We are going to take part in detecting falsified products, which are sold using Belarusian brands, in order to protect Belarusian producers,” said Leonid Marinich.

According to the source, 150 Belarusian enterprises run by the Agriculture and Food Ministry smoothly export their products to Saint Petersburg. In January-August 2016 food export to Saint Petersburg totaled $350 million, 97.8% as against the same period of last year.

Saint Petersburg Days are scheduled to take place in Minsk on 6-8 October. The event has been arranged for the sake of stepping up humanitarian cooperation and developing economic ties between companies of Saint Petersburg and Minsk, for finding potential partners and for setting up joint ventures. The delegation of the Russian city includes over 100 people, who are representatives of municipal government agencies, people of culture, heads of enterprises and organizations.

A number of events will be held as part of Saint Petersburg Days in Belarus. Those include a business forum involving representatives of the business communities of Saint Petersburg and Belarus, roundtable sessions on topics of mutual interest (cooperation in food trade, trade and economic affairs, a session of the city program Petersburg Startup), a business matchmaking session, visits to Minsk's top enterprises, and concerts of Saint Petersburg artists.
