Reconstruction of western section of Dnieper-Bug Canal completed

BREST, 31 July (BelTA) - The waterworks facility Zaluzie was reopened after renovations in Zhabinka District (Brest Oblast). Its commissioning completes the large-scale reconstruction on the western section of the Dnieper-Bug Canal, BelTA has learned.

All hydro facilities on this section of the canal, which is part of the international waterway E40, correspond to the European standard 5a now. “The European Union is interested in restoring the Waterway E40. In the long term the Dnieper-Bug Canal will be used by cruise and cargo ships going from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea. By the way, the Dnieper-Bug Canal is 1,100km shorter than the Danube waterway. This is its advantage,” said Ivan Linko, senior engineer at the Dnieper-Bug Waterway maintenance and construction company.

The reconstruction of the waterworks facility Zaluzie on the River Mukhavets started in September 2012 under the state program for the development of inland waterway and maritime transport for 2011-2015. More than Br55 billion was earmarked for its reconstruction from the national budget and the investment fund of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The old wooden facility was replaced with the modern concrete one. Its control system is fully automated.

There are nine locks on the Dnieper-Bug Canal in Brest Oblast. Reconstruction of the hydraulic facilities has been carried out since 1998. With better shipping conditions, the Dnieper-Bug Canal should help the region increase the number of passenger and freight traffic.
