Remains of 18th-century wall paintings uncovered on Corpus Christi Church in Nesvizh

MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – Remains of wall paintings presumably dating back to 18th-century were uncovered during the research work on the Corpus Christi Church in Nesvizh, BelTA learned from Natalia Khvir, the head of the department for the protection of historical and cultural heritage at the Historical and Cultural Heritage Office of the Culture Ministry.

She noted that the remains of the unique painting were uncovered in the course of the research work at the Corpus Christi Church, which is part of the former Jesuit monastery complex, a historical and cultural site of the 16th-19th centuries. "While exploring the plaster layers of the facade, specialists of OAO Belrestavratsiya found remains of unique paintings, presumably of the 18th century, the period of Michal Kazimierz "Rybenko" Radziwill and artist Ksawery Dominik Heski, the author of the famous painting “The Last Supper” in the Corpus Christi Church. With high probability we can now say that the facades of the church, a specimen of the Baroque architecture, were richly decorated with ornamental and narrative murals. There are no analogue paintings in Belarus today,” Natalia Khvir said.

She added that the research continues. Experts keep uncovering new elements of painting. Belarus' Culture Ministry plans to restore the uncovered painting.

The historical and cultural site of the 16th-19th centuries, the complex of the former Jesuit monastery – Corpus Christi Church in the town of Nesvizh, is included into the State List of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Belarus, and has the highest category “0”. It is also part of the Architectural, Cultural and Residential Complex of the Radziwill Family at Nesvizh included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
