System of romanization of Belarusian geographical names approved by UN

MINSK, 13 August (BelTA) - A delegation of the Republic of Belarus attended the 10th UN Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names in New York, BelTA learnt from the Foreign Ministry of Belarus.

"The conference adopted the international system of romanization of Belarusian geographical names developed by the State Property Committee of the Republic of Belarus,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry also noted that Belarusian approaches to transliteration of geographical names in the Roman alphabet are based on the historical writing in Latin and conform to international standards of transliteration of geographical names.

System of romanization of Belarusian geographical names will be used in maps, tourist and other documents for international use.
