MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – The informal summit of the leaders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has opened in Astana on 12 August, BelTA has learnt.
Taking part in the summit are six heads of state, including Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. It is noteworthy that President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev showed up wearing a tie as if he forgot about the informality of the meeting, but then took it off in front of dozens of cameras before entering the summit hall.
The summit was opened by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, as Belarus is the president of the organization this year. The Belarusian head of state noted that top on the agenda are global and regional threats to security and stability of the CSTO member states. “A number of countries of the region are swept by destructive processes requiring close attention, and probably adequate response in the interests of security and stability of our states,” the President of Belarus said.
In the spotlight of the summit will also be efficient operation of the organization and issues that emerged between the CSTO member states. One of the points of the agenda is the forthcoming US withdrawal from Afghanistan and man-made catastrophes in the CSTO responsibility zone. The participants of the meeting point to a surge of international terrorism, illegal arms and drugs trade and threats to information security.
Alexander Lukashenko noted that holding such an event in the intersession period has already become a good tradition that gives the heads of state an opportunity to share opinions and communicate their views on a number of topical issues of the international security agenda that to one extent or another affect the CSTO space and interests.
