Latvia hopes for top-level EU, EaP attendance at Riga summit in May

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – Latvia expects that the Riga summit in May will be attended by top-level officials from the European Union and the Eastern Partnership countries, Foreign Minister of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics told reporters in Minsk on 20 February, BelTA has learned.

“As for the Riga summit, now it is only February, and three months of work are ahead of us. But I would like to say that Latvia hopes that both the European Union and the Eastern Partnership members will be represented by top-level officials at the summit in Riga. We have not sent any invitations yet. It will be done by President of the European Council Donald Tusk jointly with the Latvian government in late March or early April,” the minister said.

In his words, it is still needed to elaborate the agenda of the summit. “The issues will be discussed at the level of EU foreign ministers and heads of government in March,” the foreign minister of Latvia explained.

“I see that now it is possible to advance relations between the European Union and Belarus, of course, taking into account Belarus' interests. It does not mean that the vector of the Belarusian policy is changing. We take the interests of Belarus into consideration; we will not draw anyone to our side. We will develop normal relations on the basis of mutual interests,” the minister stressed.
