Ambassador: Belarus, Japan maintain active economic relations

MINSK, 9 July (BelTA) – The Belarusian-Japanese economic relations have been developing dynamically, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Japan Sergei Rakhmanov told reporters, BelTA has learned.

"In January-May Belarus' exports to Japan went up by 17%. More so, there are major new projects. For example, an Amkodor delegation has recently visited Japan. For the first time in many years, Amkodor received a tied loan from a Japanese firm, without interest and without government guarantees. This is a new thing in our relations, and we hope it will continue,” said Sergei Rakhmanov.

The Ambassador spoke about the growing interest of Japan to the post-Soviet space as a whole and Belarus in particular. According to him, the IT firms have been very active. The executives of the Belarusian Hi-Tech Park have been recently on a visit to Japan. "The visit was a continuation of an interesting deal that took place last year. Rakuten, one of the largest Japanese e-commerce firms, bought out the Viber firm which has Belarusian roots. Now this company, which is a resident company of the Hi-Tech Park, receives finances from Japan. In addition, the negotiations are underway to strengthen the cooperation and create new joint projects,” he said.

From 13 to 15 July Minsk will host a regular business forum with Japan. Minsk expects a large group of Japanese businessmen. "This forum will be held for a reason. We have had the positive dynamics on all essential positions. The basis for this is the intensification of contacts between businesses of Belarus and Japan," said the Ambassador.

He stressed that the most important thing that has been achieved as a result of this work is that Japan has started to understand the importance of the partnership with Belarus. "Both the leadership and the general public of Japan have started changing their vision of our country. Belarus's role in promoting the Ukrainian settlement has played an important role in this process. Now it is one of the important themes in the Japanese politics. They keep repeating to us that they see our country in a new light," said Sergei Rakhmanov.
