Former prisoner Yury Linha, who spoke out on beatings in a Belarusian prison earlier this month, was sentenced Friday to a fine of 35,000 rubels ($7 at the National Bank’s exchange rate) on a charge of drinking alcohol in a public place.
His trial was held in his hometown of Smarhon, Hrodna region, where he was arrested on August 15 and charged with the offense.
According to reports, the man was maltreated while in detention.
The chief of the Smarhon district police department examined his case on August 19, according to Andrey Bandarenka, leader of a human rights group called Platforma. Policemen acted as witnesses. Witnesses for the defense were not allowed to be present; only Mr. Linha’s lawyer attended the trial, Mr. Bandarenka said.
“The policemen recited one and the same sentences when giving testimony and made confused statements as soon as they were asked a question,”’ said Mr. Bandarenka, referring to the lawyer.
They failed to produce a doctor’s certificate confirming that Mr. Linha was under the influence of alcohol on August 15, as they did not have him examined, he said.
Mr. Linha maintained that he had not been drinking alcohol before his arrest.
He is set to appeal the fine at the Smarhon District Court.
At a news conference organized by Platforma on August 1, Mr. Linha said that inmates were regularly beaten up by guards at Correctional Institution No. 13 in Hlybokaye, Vitsyebsk region.
His arrest came days after he was threatened by authorities with persecution and warned against speaking out on prisoner abuse by police in Smarhon. He was later charged with violating the terms of his release from prison. In particular, the man was accused of leaving Smarhon without obtaining permission from the police. //
