Belarusian banks move up Top 1000 World Banks ranking

MINSK, 8 August (BelTA) – Belarusian banks have improved their positions in the Top 1000 World Banks ranking annually published by a reputable magazine The Banker. The ranking has been posted on the website of the magazine, BelTA.

The ranking for 2010 included two Belarusian banks – Belagroprombank and Belarusbank. Belagroprombank was placed 325th, up 78 positions compared with last year, Belarusbank was ranked 441st (up 11 positions). The both banks are among the 25 biggest banks of Central and Eastern Europe based on the definition of Tier 1 capital.

The inclusion of the banks into the ranking of the world’s major banks is a testimony of their stability and strong positions in Belarus and abroad.

The Banker compiles the Top 1000 World Banks ranking using the methods of the Basel Bank for International Settlements where the major criterion is based on the Tier 1 capital. Bank of America leads the list (the capital is estimated at $163.6 billion). JP Morgan is placed second ($142.5 billion), HSBC third ($133.2 billion).

Belagroprombank was registered on 3 September 1991. In accordance with Resolution No 849/7 of the Government and the National Bank of 18 June 2008, Belagroprombank was authorized to serve government programs. In terms of regulatory capital, Belagroprombank is the largest credit and financial institution of the country. The bank has been rated by Moody's Investors Service and Standard & Poor's.

Belarusbank is the largest multi-function financial institution of the country, which offers more than 100 kinds of banking services and products, including cash and settlement services, lending, deposit operations, leasing, factoring, collection, international and interbank settlements, foreign exchange and conversion operations, operations with bank cards, consulting.
