Belarusian MFA on "numerous" comments by Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis on Belarus

Lithuanian authorities deliberately and artificially foment the tension around Belarus within the framework of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the current chairman of which is Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis. This was stated by Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Savinykh on April 6.

Over 150 EU, USA representatives banned from entering Belarus

 Belarus has prepared and has been implementing measures in response to the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions on Belarusian officials. The reciprocal measures will affect over 150 people from the European Union and the USA, the news agency Interfax West quoted a source in the government.

Speaking to press in Brussels after a foreign ministers' meeting on Monday (31 January), Polish foreign minister Radek Sikorski said: "We gave the high representative [EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton] ... the legal possibility to use narrowly-targeted but effective sanctions against people, institutions and Belarusian companies that either allow themselves to be used for repression or which give backing to the regime," the euobserver.com reported.

Azubalis welcomes EHU determination to accept expelled Belarusian students

On January 18 in Vilnius, during the meeting with Rector of the European Humanities University (EHU) Anatoli Mikhailov, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Azubalis welcomed the university's determination to accept all students, who may be expelled from Belarusian universities for political reasons, reported BC the press service of the Foreign Ministry.

President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis, the new OSCE Chairperson-in-Office as from 1 January, discussed priorities and main concerns for the Lithuanian Chairmanship of this Organization, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. The President underlined that the OSCE chaired by Lithuania would seek progress in resolving frozen conflicts, strengthen cooperation in combating modern threats, including energy isolation and cyber threats, and seek to enforce respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms by ensuring the freedom of press and democratic elections, the lithuaniatribune.com reported.

The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office: There is an important job for the OSCE to continue in Belarus

On 1 January 2011, Lithuania took over the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, with a focus on internal and external threats in the OSCE area, fostering democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms, notably freedom of the media, promoting energy security in Europe and building upon synergies between regional organizations, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reports. "We will work towards building a true security community, without dividing lines, where commitments are implemented, the use of force is unthinkable, and human rights and fundamental freedoms are fully respected," said Audronius Azubalis, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania, and the new Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE.

Grybauskaite Called a Decade of Belarus' Isolation a Disaster

Lithuanian President Grybauskaite rejected criticism of her predecessor Valdas Adamkus, who had criticized the incumbent president of Lithuania for the policy towards Belarus. According to Dali Grybauskaite, catastrophe is that not a sign of friendship has been shown to Belarus and its leader, Alexander Lukashenko, called the last dictator in Europe, but they have instead turned their backs for ten years.

The Reuters: Lithuania calls on Minsk to extend OSCE mission

"Lithuania promised action on Monday to make neighbouring Belarus rethink a decision halting operations of Europe's top rights watchdog after it had criticised Minsk's handling of disputed presidential elections. Lithuania, which took over the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe's rotating presidency on January 1, also called on Belarus to release opposition candidates detained after last month's election which gave President Alexander Lukashenko a fourth term in office", the reuters.com reported.
