Press Secretary Andrei Savinykh comments on the European Parliament’s resolution.
The Foreign Ministry considers the approaches of the European Parliament unacceptable and in breach of neighourhood principles. The European Parliament reproduces and imposes on all aloof and warped interpretations of the Belarus developments. The efforts we step up to bring back a constructive dialogue come across ultimatums and threats presented as a position of principle. At the same time the European Parliament champions measures of political and economic pressure on Belarus targeting immediate damage to our country in breach of all standards of international law.
The authors of the resolution seek to make use of the after-effects of the global economic crisis to destabilize the economic environment in the country. In fact, they urge measures to undermine stability of the Belarusian society and well-being of the people. If such steps are taken, the Belarusian side will be forced to reciprocate. Those will be adequate measures of response targeting persons and structures in the first place who are active generators of anti-Belarusian actions. However, we shall continue with efforts to bring back constructive co-operation. We are confident that a philosophy of pressure and confrontation displayed by the European Parliament stands no chance to stay in the long run.
