Standard & Poor's Ratings Services lowered Belarus's junk-level, long-term local currency sovereign credit rating one notch, citing the rising general government debt burden and decreased fiscal flexibility.

A five-year loan of USD 50 million from the EBRD to Belpromstroybank

Thanks to a five-year loan of USD 50 million from the EBRD, Belpromstroybank, a major local bank boasting Belarus’s third largest branch network is set to boost its lending to grass-roots entrepreneurs in order to encourage the development of private enterprise in a country where the public sector accounts for 70 percent of GDP.

EBRD: No support to the Belarusian central authorities

In December 2009 the EBRD Board of Directors approved a ‘calibrated’ Strategy for Belarus, which enables the Bank to respond in a flexible way to developments in the country measured against clearly set out political and economic benchmarks.  In April 2011 the Board met to review the Bank’s operations and the country’s adherence to those benchmarks.

Belarus will have privatized assets totaling $ 7.5 billion by 2014

This was stated by Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin. According to him, it fits in the conditions of the credit program of the Eurasian Economic Community. According to Kudrin, EurAsEC will provide the official Minsk with $1.24 billion loans this year.

NYT: Belarus Economic Crisis Deepens as Currency Plunges

Belarus deepened Wednesday when its currency plunged in value after the Central Bank lifted restrictions on the exchange rate. The rule change, and a subsequent drop in the value of the ruble, had been anticipated. But the speed of the currency’s collapse — by about 25 percent against the dollar in one day — jarred nerves and sent a ripple through European markets, though a small one. Belarus’s eccentric politics have largely isolated the country economically.

Greece and Belarus Marked as Weakest Economies Countries in Europe

International rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded Greece's credit rating by two points - from "BB-" to "B." Experts predict a further downgrade with increasing of default risk. Thus, Greece's credit rating has become equal to that of Belarus - the economies of these two countries are considered the weakest in Europe.
