Attacks on freedom of expression impoverish the society as well as evidence of the authorities' fear and their deep distrust towards the people. This was stated August 24 by Charge d'Affaires in Belarus Michael Scanlan at the reception on the freedom of creative expression in Minsk, when addressing the representatives of Belarusian intellectuals.
"Beauty and truth remain forever, which can't be said about censorship. Unwritten prohibitions, restrictions, cancellation of shows in the last minute contradict the spirit of creativity, represented by you, the artists," he said, BelaPAN.
According to the diplomat, the ability to freely express personal views through art is the basis for growth and development of society and the individual. He expressed hope that "these sad events" will soon be buried in history.
As Telegraf previously reported, March 3, a list of artists, whose mention is undesirable in official Belarusian media, showed up on the Internet. Reportedly, this list without the stamps and signatures was given to all editors of the official media and radio stations. This list includes the Belarusian cultural figures, as well as representatives of Russia and foreign countries.
Belarus groups, included in the list, are "Liapis Trubetskoi," "Palac," "Krama," "N.R.M," "Neuro Dubel," "Krambambulia," "Naka," the whole staff of Belarus "Free Theatre," author Volha Ipatava, People's Artist of Belarus Zinaida Bandarenka, poets Henadz Buraukin, Siarhei Zakonnikau and Anatol Viartsinski, artist Aliaksei Marachkin, playwrights Uladzimir Khalip and Andrei Kurejchyk, filmmaker Yury Khaschevatski and Uladzimir Kolas.
Russia I presented in the "black list" by "DDT," "Naïve," "Tarakani," singer Dmitry Spirin, writers Andrei Bitov, Boris Vasilyev, Alexander Gelman, Viktor Erofeev, Leonid Zhukhovitsky, Cyril Kovaldzhi and Eduard Uspensky.
Undesirable performers from the Western countries are Neil Tennant and Rob Luis, the groups Pet Shop Boys, Tru Thoughts, Wah Wah 45, 7 Samurai, DJ - Format, Bonobo, Florian Kelly, playwright Tom Stoppard, the participants in the campaign of solidarity with Belarus, Kevin Kline, Ian McKellen, Samuel West, Jude Law and Kevin Spacey.
