Belarus, Amur Oblast mull over joint ventures in agriculture

MINSK, 18 July (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia’s Amur Oblast may establish joint ventures in agricultural industry, Minister of Agriculture and Food of Belarus Mikhail Rusyi told reporters after talks with a delegation of Amur Oblast.

“I think we will set up a number of joint ventures following this visit,” said the minister.

In particular, the sides can set up joint ventures for cultivation and processing of soybeans, manufacturing and assembling of agricultural equipment. Mikhail Rusyi said that joint ventures may be created in Amur Oblast and in Belarus. In terms of agricultural machinery, most likely the joint ventures will manufacture milking machines, sowing aggregates and other equipment.

Belarus is interested in the expertise of Amur Oblast in soybean production. In turn, the Belarusian side will share its experience in production of corn seeds and other agricultural crops. “I think we will consider major programs on these issues in the near future,” Mikhail Rusyi said. In his words, scientists of Belarus and Russia have common interests for cooperation in the field of agriculture.

Trade between the enterprises affiliated with Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Belarus and Russia’s Amur Oblast amounted to $5.5 million in 2010 ($231,000 in 2009). Belarus’ agricultural exports over the past year totaled $5.5 million. Major export items are powdered milk, butter, cheese and cottage cheese.
