Belarus’ Cabinet to review state vegetable cultivation program progress

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – The progress in implementing the state program for developing potato growing, vegetable farming and fruit farming in 2011-2015, in particular, the part on building and rebuilding storage facilities for potatoes and vegetable products, will be reviewed at an out session of Belarus’ Council of Ministers Presidium in Tolochin District on 23 August, the press service of the Belarusian government told BelTA.

In line with the program this year the area under potatoes of state-run agricultural enterprises and private farmers stands at 71,100 hectares. The area under potatoes fit for commercial processing is 16,200 hectares. As of 1 August Belarusian potato-processing enterprises signed contracts for the delivery of 132,700 tonnes of potatoes.

To enable guaranteed provision of processing enterprises with domestic raw materials, this year eight organizations continue working on developing their own feedstock areas. As much as 2,900 hectares in these areas is used to grow potatoes.

The program provides for setting up integration complexes based on large organizations, with the area under potatoes at least 300 hectares in each. OAO Mashpishcheprod is one of such complexes.

The program provides for increasing the output of import substitutes made from potatoes via manufacturing a wide choice of products locally. This year the company OAO Otechestvo is supposed to start manufacturing semi-prepared fresh potatoes, with the output target set at 500 tonnes. OAO Mashpishcheprod has been tasked with manufacturing 100 tonnes of flash-frozen potatoes, 380 tonnes of fried potato products, and 25 tonnes of semi-prepared potatoes in vacuum packaging.

The session will also review the storage of crop and animal husbandry products between seasons in 2011-2012 and measures taken to enable proper storage conditions for fruits and vegetables. In addition, the progress in implementing a program for advancing selection and seed farming of grain crops, grain legumes, industrial crops and fodder crops in 2008-2013 will be discussed. Participants of the session will discuss the draft presidential decree meant to improve conditions of mandatory insurance of agricultural crops, cattle and poultry.
