Belarusian Christian Democracy leader calls on Poland not to extradite businessman Andrey Zhukavets

Vital Rymashewski, co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, has called on Poland not to surrender Belarusian businessman Andrey Zhukavets to Minsk.

Vital RymashewskiSpeaking at a news conference in Minsk on Monday, Mr. Rymashewski described the businessman as a political refugee.

The politician expressed concern about the scheduled resumption of a court hearing on his case in Bialystok, Poland, on Tuesday.

There is a high probability that Mr. Zhukavets, who fled Belarus because of political persecution in 1999 and still has not been granted political asylum, will be extradited, said Mr. Rymashewski.

He said that Mr. Zhukavets’ firm had been printing leaflets and other material for opposition parties and pro-democratic civil society groups and the Belarusian authorities sought to persecute him for that.

“Opposition groups experience very difficult financial circumstances today,” said Mr. Rymashewski. “The authorities persecute those who help the opposition. The extradition of Zhukavets would send a very alarming signal to those who still continue supporting pro-democratic organizations.”

The politician said that several other Belarusian opposition activists might also face extradition, mentioning Vyachaslaw Siwchyk, leader of an opposition group called Razam, and Yury Karetnikaw, leader of Pravy Alyans (Right Alliance). The two men fled to Kyiv after the December 2010 presidential election. // ]]> BelaPAN ]]>
