China interested in Belarus’ synthetic emerald technologies

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Chinese companies have shown interest in the synthetic gem technologies of the Material Science Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB), BelTA learnt from head of the superconductor physics laboratory of the Center Vladimir Merkulov.

Belarusian scientists and Chinese businessmen are studying various cooperation schemes. Belarus is ready to share its technologies on beneficial terms. The partnership with Chinese companies will help increase the export of Belarusian synthetic emeralds and promote theses products on the Asian market. “We hope the talks will be productive,” the scientist underlined.

Vladimir Merkulov noted that the demand for Belarusian synthetic emeralds and rubies on the domestic market is growing year to year. The capacities of the Center allow making about 10,000 carats of gems per year. The Center fully satisfies the demand of Belarusian jewelry makers and can sell synthetic precious stones to other countries. Latvia already purchases Belarus-made synthetic emeralds. Belarusian scientists are exploring other export opportunities, as well.

The Center has been producing synthetic rubies and emeralds for several years already. The scientists have recently grown a red emerald. Synthetic gems look absolutely like natural precious stones having the same optical properties and transparency. Besides, they have fewer defects. Natural emeralds are unique and rather rare stones, their deposits are very limited. According to estimates, the deposits of natural emeralds will deplete faster than those of oil, for example. Therefore, more and more foreign jewelry makers prefer synthetic gems.

The Material Science Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus carry out fundamental research in various fields of solid state physics, including solid state theory, magnetism, semiconductors, high-temperature superconductors, and superhard materials. The scientists have developed new magnetic, semiconducting, superconducting, superhard materials and technologies.
