DOHA, 16 August (BelTA) – The participants of the informal summit of the CSTO in Astana presided by the Belarusian President have made a meaningful step to iron out disagreements inside the organization, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko told reporters in Doha on 16 August, BelTA has learnt.
“If a country abides by the CSTO principles, it should be fully involved in the activities of the organization. If not, it should leave,” the President said.
The participants the summit decided to draft a comprehensive document articulating the goals of the organization. This document will be prepared by the December meeting of the CSTO heads of state. A key area for attention at the informal summit was the treaty on the establishment of the collective rapid response forces. Russia was encouraged to ramp up efforts to create and equip the forces. The parties discussed economic cooperation within the CSTO; some progress was made in economic relations with Russia. The prospects of the gas talks and conclusion of the gas contract appeared more certain during the session of the Union State Council of Ministers on 15 August.
