First session of EURONEST PA to be held in Strasbourg

The first session of the EURONEST PA Parliamentary Assembly will be held in Strasbourg on September 14-15.

The statement came from head of the Azerbaijani delegation to EURONEST PA Elkhan Suleymanov.

The parliamentarian said recommendations concerning the Eastern Partnership Summit that will be held in Warsaw on September 29-30 will be discussed and a relevant decision will be made during the session. Co-rapporteurs of the Committee on Political Affairs, Human Rights and Democracy David Darchiashvili and Traian Ungureanu prepared initial report “Recommendations for 2011 Eastern Partnership Summit: high expectations for purposeful activity”, the report was sent to Euronest PA committees for opinions and proposals.

Parliamentarian said the committees prepared initial opinion on the report. The Azerbaijani delegation prepared a number of proposals and submitted to the relevant committees.

Elkhan Suleymanov said final opinions for inclusion into the report “Recommendations for 2011 Eastern Partnership Summit: high expectations for purposeful activity” will be confirmed at the meetings of the Euronest PA’s Committee on Political Affairs, Human Rights and Democracy, Committee on Economic Integration, Legal Approximation and Convergence with EU Policies, Committee on Energy Security and Committee on Social Affairs, Education, Culture and Civil Society. Declaration on Belarus drafted by the co-rapporteurs of the working group on Belarus Dumitru Dyakov and Yatzek Sariush-Volski will be discussed and adopted during the session.

MP noted that the Assembly Bureau will discuss Azerbaijan’s proposal to hold Euronest PA session in May, 2012 in the Eastern Partnership countries. According to procedure, Azerbaijan proposed to hold the Assembly’s next meeting in Baku.

During the voting, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia and Euronest PA’s co-president from the European Parliament Christian Vigen supported the idea to hold the Parliamentary Assembly’s plenary meeting in Azerbaijan. But Armenia and Bureau members from Poland Sariush-Volski and from Romania Traian Ungureanu were against this proposal. Moldova abstained. Due to absence of 2/3 majority of votes, it was decided to discuss the issue during the September session in Strasbourg. We are hopeful that we will achieve positive decision concerning this issue in the Bureau’s meeting in September”.
