Lars Buenger, chairman of Germany’s Libereco – Partnership for Human Rights, has signed a petition calling for human rights defender Ales Byalyatski`s release against the signatories` guarantee that he would not flee from prosecution or obstruct the investigation or engage in criminal activities.
For a couple of years, Libereco has been engaged in organizing campaigns in support of victims of human rights violations in Belarus.
According to the Minsk-based Vyasna human rights group, of which Mr. Byalyatski is chairman, some 500 people including Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi of Iran had signed the petition for the release of the Belarusian activist as of August 17.
The 48-year-old Byalyatski was arrested on August 4 and formally charged with large-scale tax evasion on August 12.
Under Part Two of the Criminal Code’s Article 243, the offense carries a penalty of a “restricted freedom” term of up to five years or a prison term of three to seven years. // BelaPAN
