Lukashenka meets with emir of Qatar in Doha

Alyaksandr Lukashenka on August 15 met with the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, in Doha.

According to the Belarusian leader’s press office, issues discussed during the meeting included the possibility of building a plant in Qatar, which would produce combined fertilizers, and a multifunctional sports and hotel complex in Minsk, a project estimated at up to $100 million.

Qatari companies were also invited to invest in Belarus’ potash mining industry, the establishment of trade and logistics centers, the hotel industry and tourism.

Messrs. Lukashenka and al-Thani also discussed a project called the “Qatari Island in Europe," which would envisage the establishment of a special zone where Qatari banks, and business and cultural centers of Persian Gulf countries would be located. Such a zone is expected to help advance Qatar’s interests in Europe and boost foreign direct investment from Gulf countries.

Nine documents were signed following the talks, including interstate agreements on air service, on mutual legal assistance, on cooperation in the media sphere, and on visa free travel for holders of diplomatic passports, as well as interstate memorandums of understanding on cooperation in the tourism sphere and on cooperation in the mining industry.

Memorandums of understanding on cooperation were also signed between the Belarusian State Petrochemical Industry Concern (Belnafatkhim) and Qatar Petroleum, between Belarus’ news agency Belta and Qatar News Agency, and between the National Bank of Belarus and the Central Bank of Qatar.

Mr. Lukashenka will visit a number of cultural and educational facilities in the Qatari capital city on Tuesday, the press office said. // ]]> BelaPAN ]]>
