Alyaksandr Lukashenka told a group of school teachers in Minsk on August 29 that educators must take efforts to prevent youths from being involved by "rogue politicians" in "every kind of gamble."
Addressing the educators, Mr. Lukashenka criticized what he described as a falling standard of teaching at schools of general education and said that the situation could not be tolerated any longer.
Referring to a recent survey conducted by the authorities to examine practices at schools, Mr. Lukashenka noted that the "teacher comes to a school like the worker comes to a factory, he works until his working day is over and then goes home." "School cannot develop in such a way. This is not the right path of school development," government-controlled news agency BelTA quoted him as saying.
He blamed education problems on a "passive and indifferent" attitude on the part of "certain officials and teachers" and warned of the need to "shake up the country's entire teaching community."
Mr. Lukashenka reportedly emphasized the importance of teachers' role in Belarus' politics. "You are indeed the basis of our country's policies. All political campaigns, all directions of activity in our country rely on you one way or another. Just like in the Soviet times you have remained the main communicator of the ideas of our country's normal development and the basis of stability," he was quoted as saying. // BelaPAN
