German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to discuss the human rights situation in Belarus with the Russian president during their talks in Hanover on July 18 and 19, reported Poland’s news agency PAP.
Ms. Merkel will try to convince Dmitry Medvedev of the need to jointly pressure Alyaksandr Lukashenka to release political prisoners, said a source in the office of the German chancellor who did not want to be identified.
Berlin wants Moscow to use its contacts with Mr. Lukashenka to bring it home to him that his approach to human rights and democracy is a “wrong path,” the source said.
Ms. Merkel is to host Mr. Medvedev for dinner on Monday night and hold talks with him on Tuesday to discuss a series of issues, including economic cooperation, the international observation of coming parliamentary and presidential elections in Russia, the situation in Northern Africa and efforts to secure peace in the Middle East. // BelaPAN
