Minsk airport to start building second runaway this year

MINSK, 18 August (BelTA) – The construction of the second runway in the National Airport Minsk is supposed to start till the end of 2011, Pavel Bozhanov, Head of the Office for Strategic Development, Coordination, and Transport Systems Investment of the Belarusian Transport and Communication Ministry, told a press conference on 18 August.

The official explained that the project would be accomplished using a Chinese loan.

Speaking about prospects of developing and remodeling the infrastructure of the National Airport Minsk, Pavel Bozhanov pointed out that government guarantees had been a condition set by the Chinese side. The guarantees had been acquired and had been sent to China, said the official. Now the credit committee of [China’s] Exim Bank is supposed to greenlight the loan.

Now the Aviation Department is setting up an administration body for the property under construction. Documents are being drafted. “We are waiting for a draft master plan. I think by the end of the year all the procedures will be completed and the directorate will start building the second runway,” said Pavel Bozhanov.

Asked about the progress in building a logistics depot near the National Airport Minsk using investments from the Belgian company AOI NV, the representative of the Transport and Communication Ministry said that the company was about to complete design specifications and estimates for the project. There are plans to channel €388 million into accomplishing the project. “So far deadlines have not been moved although the project has slowed down somewhat due to the coordination of infrastructure matters (electricity supply, sewerage),” said Pavel Bozhanov. “We are waiting for the investor to submit the final design specifications and estimates. After that we can talk about the timeline”.
