More customs personnel employed to ease truck-jams on Belarus-Lithuania border

MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – More customs personnel have been employed to reduce queues on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, at the Kotlovka and Benyakoni checkpoints, the chief of the customs control department of the State Customs Committee of Belarus Vladimir Orlovsky told reporters when commenting on the increased cargo flow and queues on the Belarusian-Lithuania border

On 16 August Lithuania began road surface works at the Medininkai checkpoint. The adjacent Kamennyi Log checkpoint in on the Belarus side was temporarily closed for the time of repairs. Vehicles are redirected to other checkpoints on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.

Increased freight traffic has far exceeded the capacity of these checkpoints, which resulted in truck-jams. As of 13h00 on 19 August, the queue at the Kotlovka checkpoint was 350 vehicles on the side of Lithuania and 800 on the side of Belarus. The queue at the Benyakoni checkpoint was 450 vehicles queuing to exist, at the Privalka checkpoint 250 vehicles,” Vladimir Orlovsky said.

The State Customs Committee of Belarus advises freight forwarders going to the European Union to use Kozlovichi, Bruzgi-2 and Berestovitsa checkpoints on the Belarusian-Polish border.

The personnel from the Kamenny Log customs post have been sent to other border checkpoints, including Kotlovka and Benyakoni.

Road works in Medininkai will last till 7h00 on 23 August. “These works are on schedule. The Lithuanian side informed us about it two months in advance,” Vladimir Orlovsky said. He also took note that the traffic flow is pretty much even within a year. It is a bit lower at the beginning of the year. Since it is problematic to conduct road works in winter, a decision has been taken to schedule them for summer, the Belarusian official said.
