The Mozyr Interregional Organization of the National Association of the Wheelchair Users has successfully completed its US Embassy Small Grants funded project “Accessible life”. The NGO created an on-line map featuring handicap access points to public places and key buildings in the town of Mozyr and along the main traffic route from the Polish to the Russian border (Brest-Moscow highway) and from the Russian to the Ukrainian border (St. Petersburg-Minsk highway). The NGO activists did a tremendous job by confirming physical measurements, researching, and commenting on such items as locations of public facilities and the accessibility of shops, banks, hotels, parking lots, restrooms to wheelchair users. The map is located at www.freeway.by . It is an efficient tool for people with mobility difficulties to plan their routes. The Mozyr organization of wheelchair users has also developed and published a comprehensive manual “Accessible Environment for the Disabled” that includes legislation and construction regulations regarding barrier free environment with thorough explanations and illustrations for ease of use by construction companies and other interested or relevant parties.
