Lithuanin MFA “concerned about ongoing trials of post-election protesters in Belarus”

Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is deeply concerned about the ongoing trials against the participants of events in Belarus on December 19, 2010, including the ruling of Minsk court on May 14 sentencing Andrei Sannikov, one of the candidates in the Belarusian presidential elections.

Belarusian MFA on "numerous" comments by Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis on Belarus

Lithuanian authorities deliberately and artificially foment the tension around Belarus within the framework of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the current chairman of which is Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis. This was stated by Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Savinykh on April 6.

Chairman of the OSCE, Foreign Minister of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis said, speaking at a conference in Vilnius University on April 5, that, as head of the organization, he's going to continue applying efforts to ensure human rights in Belarus and support the activities of nongovernmental organizations in the country.

Dunja Mijatović, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, said  she is concerned about persistent reports that pressure is mounting against domestic and foreign journalists in Belarus, the osce.org reported.

Vilnius: Belarusian ambassador admitted that EIA of the planned construction of Belarusian NPP was not complete

On 4 April during the meeting with Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius in Vilnius, Belarusian Ambassador to Lithuania Vladimir Drazhin admitted that Belarus had not completed the international environmental impact assessment (EIA) process of the nuclear power plant (NPP) that is planned to be constructed in Belarus and informed that a detailed reply to Lithuania’s questions was currently being prepared, the urm.lt reported.

Washington post’s Lally Weymouth interviews Belarusan President Alexander Lukashenko

In December, Belarusan President Alexander Lukashenko was elected to his fourth term, and pro-democracy opponents took to the streets, charging fraud. Police rounded up some 700 people and charged 42, many with organizing a riot, an offense carrying a prison term of five to 15 years. The crackdown prompted the European Union and the United States to impose travel restrictions on Lukashenko and other top Belarusan officials and to freeze their assets, the washingtonpost.com reported.

Statement on Belarus by the Visegrad Group

The Austrian and German chancellors and prime ministers of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland have condemned the Belarusian government’s post-election crackdown on opponents and voiced support for the European Union`s sanctions against Minsk. They made the statement after a summit in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Tuesday, which was organized to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Visegrad Group made up by the four Central European nations, the foreign.gov.sk reported.
