Over 400 new or revamped health facilities in five years

Azerbaijan's Health Ministry is working to completely reform the old medical system, the health minister has said.

Hospitals are being revamped and new equipment supplied, Ogtay Shiraliyev said in an interview published in a special issue of The Business Year magazine, devoted to Azerbaijan.

"More than 400 new health facilities have been opened in the past five years including newly constructed or renovated hospitals. Renovation work in 45 clinics, which were also supplied with modern equipment, were completed last year alone. Our task is full reform of the old system. And this is achieved by constructing new buildings, installing modern equipment and improving the level of medical services," the minister said.

“The work done shows that the reforms are a success.”

"Our goal, as always, is to provide both basic and universal health care services of high quality," he continued.

The experience of developed countries is widely used in the reform of the health system, for example, in the certification process for medical staff.

Another example is the introduction of the institution of a family doctor, Shiraliyev said.

The ministry also concentrates on staff development. A total of 128 health workers from Azerbaijan were sent on courses at foreign clinics in 2010 to improve their diagnostic skills, while more agreements with foreign universities have been reached on the exchange of students and doctors, the minister said.

"Under these agreements, Azerbaijani students improve their knowledge by attending courses in Germany, Turkey, Poland, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Currently, about 40 medical staff are taking advanced medical courses in Ankara as part of our project on health care reform," Ogtay Shiraliyev said.
