Ukraine’s 20th anniversary exhibition opens in Minsk

MINSK, 23 August (BelTA) – An exhibition timed to the 20th anniversary of Ukraine opened at the headquarters of the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk on 23 August, BelTA learnt from the press service of the CIS executive Committee.

The exhibition has been organized by Ukraine’s permanent representative office in the CIS coordination organizations. The exposition is divided into two sections. The first one features photographs showing different periods of Ukraine’s development, and Ukrainian sights. Among the exhibits of the second section organized under the auspices of the Presidential Library of the Republic of Belarus are printed publications, books, brochures telling about the history of Ukraine, its achievements over 20 years of independence.

As Ukraine’s plenipotentiary in the CIS coordination organizations Ivan Bunechko stated at the opening of the exhibition, 20 years is a big period for a human being and just a blink for a state. However, this can be considered a milestone where we can take a look back, make conclusions and decide whether the path the country has chosen is the right one.

“The collapse of the USSR has left scars on its former member states. These years were quite difficult for Ukraine, too. This was a period of reestablishment of its statehood. We still have problems in some areas, but we are confident they will be addressed in the future,” Ivan Bunechko said.

In turn, chairman of the CIS Executive Committee - CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev noted that 2011 is a landmark year in the history of the Commonwealth of Independent States: the organization marks 20 years and its Member States celebrate the 20th anniversary of independence. Lives of many residents of former Soviet republics are, in some way or another, connected with Ukraine. Some people regularly go there on holidays, others have relatives there. The country is a land of abundant wildlife and talented people.

According to Sergei Lebedev, Ukraine is actively involved in cooperation within the CIS. Over the past two years Ukraine has hosted many most important forums: an informal meeting of heads of state, meetings of the Council of Defense Ministers and Foreign Ministers' Council. In late October, Kiev will host another major event - The Sixth Forum of Creative and Scientific Intelligentsia.

“Ukraine is an active member of the Commonwealth, which meets the interests of the country and the CIS as a whole. We believe that the country has a great future ahead, and it will overcome all current economic and political problems, including with our help,” said Sergei Lebedev.

Attending the opening ceremony were also ambassadors and permanent representatives of the CIS, members of diplomatic missions accredited in Belarus, representatives of the CIS Executive Committee and the Ukrainian Diaspora.
