USAID Assistance Reduces Risk of Trafficking Among Belarusian Youth

From July 18 to 22, 2011, sixteen university-aged young adults (18 to 21 years of age) seeking employment in Pinsk, Belarus participated in a job search skills training within the framework of the USAID Countering Trafficking in Persons: Belarus Project, implemented through the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Through the training, the young people currently entering the job market during Belarus’ current economic crisis have acquired skills that will enhance their competitiveness and ability to find and secure local employment. Such training also reduces the risks of being recruited for human trafficking.

During the 2010 to 2013 phase of the USAID anti-trafficking project, specially trained instructors are delivering a series of job search trainings to approximately 1,200 victims of trafficking and at-risk groups in all regions of Belarus. The training aims to empower target populations to make educated career choices, identify appropriate job opportunities in the local market, and explore and take advantage of existing economic opportunities, while raising their awareness of the dangers of being trafficked.

“Résumé writing and presentation skills, advice on how to fill in a job application and interview techniques were among the most important things I learned at the training. The instruction’s interactive manner helped me to overcome the fear of public speaking and express myself in front of unfamiliar people, which will definitely help me in my negotiations with potential employers,” said trainee Julia Kinyashova, a student of the Brest State Agro-Technical University.

Training participants reported that the course’s design was extremely helpful to the first-time job seekers as it challenges their conceptions about the job market, addresses their lack of presentation skills, and improves their ability to prioritize.
