Belarusian MFA: The Belarusian side will take adequate steps

Comment by the Head of Information Department — Press Secretary of the MFA Andrei Savinykh in connection with the ]]> decision of the EU Council of June 20, 2011. ]]>

“The adopted decision casts doubt on the ability of the EU Council to adequately assess the situation and take steps towards a constructive dialogue aimed at finding rational solutions.

It needs to be stated that the European policy is captured by the illusions and misconceptions about the real situation in our country. European Union is trying to speak with Belarus from a position of power and economic sanctions that are in fact directed against the interests of ordinary people.

In these circumstances we recall that the thinking in terms of sanctions has proven its futility already in the last century.

We are convinced that  the existing problems may be solved only through an open and equal dialogue.

At present, it must be noted that the actions of the EU are deepening the confrontation and complicate a possibility of transition to normal interaction.

The Belarusian side will take adequate steps to protect the legitimate interests of its citizens and businesses, including the response measures against the initiators of this decision”.
